This month, we're celebrating the 40th anniversary of the wheeled luggage! This first came about in 1970, when Bernard D. Sadow, who owned a Massachusetts-based company that made luggage and coats, saw a worker hauling machinery on wheeled skids while he was at the airport and lugging two huge suitcases. Without this brilliant a-ha! moment, it would have taken a longer time for any of us to enjoy the convenience of simply pulling suitcases along, rather than clutching their handles and praying for stronger arms, shoulders, and backs. Speaking as someone who recently had to pull along a large suitcase through an airport, while making my way through the Tube stations, and across the city, I joyously celebrate this anniversary.

I've never had the opportunity to take leather, canvas, or wooden trunks on trips, although I would definitely love to have one of those. There's something that looks so classic about trunks, and they look like they can lug around quite a load and take a lot of beating. An article on Telegraph looks back fondly on old-fashioned luggages and encourages everyone else to send in photos of their retro bags.

Super Mario Brothers was one of my favorite games growing up--but then again, who
didn't love that game? Apparently, loads of others do, which is why everybody goes crazy when they see
this bag, starring the NES gamepad! Even the inside of the bag's flap has a pattern of gamepads. Now the only thing that would make this bag
more perfect is if you actually press the buttons on the front.

I have fondness for duffel bags, and the
Stagecoach Waterproof Rolling Duffel by Big Agnes is pretty nice, mainly because it's not just a duffel bag, but a rolling trolley too. The second bonus is that it's waterproof. That detail is always a major consideration for me, personally. It comes in small, medium, and large sizes, with the medium bag in green and gray coming out in January 2010, as will the large version in red and gray.

Practically literally. For her show in Liverpool, Beyonce was booked into the Charles Forte Presidential Suite at the Lowry Hotel in Mancheser, but her luggage--all twelve pieces of them, namely two boxes, three carry-on bags, and seven suitcases--went to stay in another hotel. Wonder what outfits she's carrying in those bags--and how much she had to pay in excess baggage fees.

Ever been stuck in the airport during an endless layover with all your luggage, or maybe you weren't able to make it on to your flight, or maybe you arrived way too early and no one's at the airport yet to pick you up? Sure, you could sit on one of the airport chairs. Perfectly reasonable seats, except that after the first couple of hours, you'll notice that they're uncomfortable as hell and don't really make good beds when you're sleepy as hell and just need to lie down. With Erik de Nijs' Suited Cases, you can enjoy a more comfortable lie-down during those long dull hours in the airport. The set is wildly mismatched though, but hey, it's definitely attention-getting.

Or leather, rather. The
2Unfold Leather Laptop Bag is the brilliant creation of hard graft and is blessed with the following features:
. Individually numbered, limited edition
. Full vegetable tan leather (front & back)
. Flexible shock absorbent inner layer
. Inner lining in black canvas
. Concealed nylon zipper
. 3 zipper pockets
. 2 main front pockets with magnetic closures
. Removable leather shoulder strap
Probably doesn't sound all that different from the usual laptop bags, but 2Unfold can be folded and carried in many different ways, people would think you have several styles of bags from the same designer. The price: A mindbending €379. If this bag were available in my neck of the woods, I would definitely, definitely snap it up.

Airlines these days seem to be slashing the pounds off their allowable baggage weight requirements, forcing passengers to scale back the amount of things they're taking on and bringing home from their trips. It's not the best rule to have to follow if you'll be staying for a long time abroad or in some other place. Sometimes, it's not just the number of things you're bringing that makes your luggage so heavy, but rather the suitcase itself. A lot of suitcases are made with heavy materials, and this only means that you can't bring everything you want because even with just a small number of possessions in the suitcase, you're already on the verge of breaching the weight limit.
So travelers rejoice, because Tumi has unveiled the Vapor collection. The suitcases are made of super lightweight polycarbonate, which makes them very light and strong enough to endure tumbles in the cargo hold and in the airport. Three styles make up the collection: a medium packing case, an extended packing case, and a carry-on, and each one comes in black or silver. To better protect your belongings, the bags also have molded protective bumpers on their edges.

Ever flown to a different country or a far-off city and wished that you had your bike with you so you could get around on your own without having to rent a bike or take public transportation? Personally, I haven't, but I'm sure there are people out there who've thought of it and never thought they'd see the day when their dreams come true. That day just happens to be today. Italy's Scicon Bags has come up with the AeroTech Evolution, a case that can hold your dismantled bike so you can take it with you everywhere you go in the world. It's made of vacuum-formed ABS plastic so it keeps your bike safe even as it gets tossed around in the plane's cargo hold. And don't worry about your bike parts rattling around inside the case. Quick clamping devices hold the wheels in place, while belts protect the rest of the bike from sliding.

You know, I'm a huge fan of luggage, but I was never really aware that bagmakers ever created special product lines for automakers until
a few months ago. The latest company to partner up with an automobile company is Louis Vuitton, who is creating a custom luggage set for Japan's Infiniti. The carmaker is launching a concept car at the Geneva Motor Show next month, and the car will come with LV's luggage set. Now wouldn't that be something to show off? You get an awesome car AND a luggage set from one of the world's most sought-after brands. Fine, I don't really get the connection between luggage and vehicles, and all I can ask is
Why? But it should be an interesting partnership nevertheless, right?

If I had to create my own luggage from scratch, I envision it as something really tough, the type that's waterproof and able to withstand extreme temperatures and conditions, and wouldn't even have a single scratch after getting blown up. Of course, all I can do about it is dream, but unlike me, Kendall Waddey went ahead to bring her plans to life. This teenage girl was disgruntled about the ho-hum appearance of luggage available in the market, and told her mother that someday, she'll design a line of luggage that looks attractive, fun, and colorful. She didn't have to wait long, because her parents totally supported her plans. And Like Luggage was born. Like Luggage carries accessory bags, upright cases, and duffel bags that all come in adorable colors and polka-dot patterns. It's a fresh, youthful collection that's perfect for young girls, but hey, it's also a good option for women on holiday who want to add a cute twist to their travel gear.

I recently bought a DSLR camera, so of course, a bag to carry all my gear was necessary. I already have this bag by Tamrac, but I also needed something that would fit all my lenses as well as my laptop. I was looking at Tamrac's and Lowepro's rolling bags, but a chance encounter with Case Logic's SLRC-4 answered my prayers.
The specs:
Fits up to 15.4" laptops in separate, padded compartment
Removable shelves and flexible walls create a fully customizable interior
Impact-resistant base protects your hardware from moisture and toppling over
Dedicated, weather-proof camera space protects your hardware and helps prevent loss or damage of accessories during frequent removal or access
Organized storage for all camera and computer accessories
Looking at it at first, I had no doubt that it could easily house my camera, my three lenses, and the battery charger. I was pretty skeptical about whether my 15.4" laptop would really fit, but I took a chance and bought it anyway. Luckily for me, it does hold my laptop rather snugly. The two side compartments can also carry my laptop's adapter and my portable hard drive case, and there are also straps that can hold your tripod in place.
It's a pretty sturdy bag, and the padded portion that rests against your back makes the whole thing comfortable to use. When it's full, though, it can be a wee bit heavy, but maybe that's just me and my being small, plus the weight of my laptop. I've had my boyfriend carry it while it's packed with everything and he didn't have a problem with it. I also love how compact it is. All in all--a pretty good bag that does the job of keeping equipment safe, and it looks fierce, too.

Alfred Dunhill, purveyor of fine leather goods, has teamed up with automobile great Bentley to create for it a stylish line of luggage, which consists of large and small suitcases, a weekend bag, a briefcase, and a small bag for toiletries. The entire set, which is crafted out of brown natural grain leather, will be sold for over £4,000. Not for your average traveler, obviously.

Carrying your luggage around used to be quite a drag and even today's trolley luggage can still be a challenge to carry; sometimes the handle can be pretty flimsy, but the most annoying part is still having to deal with the weight of the luggage.
Live Luggage has come up with an extremely easy way that helps travelers bear the weight of their bags much more easily. The wheels of their Power-Assisted suitcase, which retails for a staggering $1,365.25, are equipped with a motor and the bag's anti-gravity handle puts most of the suitcase's weight on the wheels. The handle also has sensors which activate the motor, so when you need to lug your suitcase around, the motor comes to life, making you feel as though you're not carrying a heavy load at all. Digital Trends has all the details.

One of the best ways to make sure that your luggage is unique, eye-catching, and unforgettable is by choosing ones that come in funky patterns and colors that aren't typically chosen by people for their suitcases. Majority of people tend to choose black, dark red, dark green, and dark blue luggage, which is why you've probably encountered a bit of confusion when looking for your own bags at the baggage claim area. Those colors are, frankly, pretty boring, so you'd probably want to look into something much more attractive.
How about giving pink a try? That's if you don't mind having a look that's Elle Woods-esque. These three pink products offered by Luggage Online may just fit the bill, plus you'll find that they're easy to describe if your bags ever get lost in transit.
American Tourister offers this floral luggage set that includes a wheeled upright suitcase, a carry-on suitcase, and a tote bag. Here are the details on its features.
All pieces have fully lined interiors. Uprights expand 2in. for extra packing space when needed. Removable wetpak, ideal for toiletries or damp items. Interior lid mesh pocket for organization. Tote has a full zippered opening for easy access and a rear pocket to keep small items organized.
The look is just right for a Hawaiian or a Caribbean getaway, don't you think?

The
Moda Turnberry set, which includes an upright suitcase, an overnight bag, and a train case, looks like the perfect luggage for stylish teenagers or prepsters; try tying the handles with a mint green ribbon for the ultimate in preppy style. The color may be on the feminine side, but the pattern is low-key and no-nonsense, so even a businesswoman can pull off carrying one of the items in the set and still look good. The train case is particularly charming, but I think it could have used a small mirror inside to make it easier to primp while on the road or in the air.

Shell suitcases tend to be a little on the heavier side sometimes, but
this one offered by International Traveller promises to be a lightweight suitcase. The pale pink color is absolutely charming and the large white polka dots add a very pretty touch. Just imagine how much attention these will get while they're rolling away on the carousel in the baggage claim area. Best of all, you can tell they're yours right away thanks to their distinctive look.
